Timothy Taylor Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of new work by British artist James Rielly. It will be the artistʼs first solo exhibition in London since 2003 and will include a large body of new paintings and the artistʼs first wall installation.

Rielly draws inspiration from newspaper images and amateur photographs, showing children and adults in situations that hover between the humdrum and the bizarre, decontextualised by the removal of any narrative link. This exhibitionʼs title ʻLife of Riellyʼ reflects the pervasion of the artistʼs ever-present black sense of humour in his work, but there is also an underlying seriousness.

In 1966, Wales was struck by the desperate tragedy of Aberfan, when 116 children were killed after a coal slag heap buried a school. The Minister of State for Wales said at the time that “A generation of children has been wiped out”. An image based on a memory of this disaster appears in a large painting by Rielly; a black pyramid ominously suffocating the tender flesh pink of a house.

James Rielly was born in 1956, in Wrexham, Wales, and currently resides near Toulouse having lived previously in Belfast, Berlin and London. Recent group exhibitions include ʻContre-Imagesʼ, Carré dʼArt, Nîmes (2004); ‘Outlook’, Benakri Museum, Athens (2003); ʻChild in Timeʼ, Gemeentemuseum, Helmond (2003); ‘Once Again’, John Hansard Gallery, Southampton (2003); ‘The Double’, The Lowry Art Centre, Salford (2000); ‘Sensation!’, Royal Academy, London, travelled to Hamburger Bahnhof, Berlin and Brooklyn Museum of Art, New York (1997-1999).

Solo exhibitions have included Ramis Barquet Gallery, New York (2004); Galerie Nathalie Obadia, Paris (2004); Galeria Distrito Cu4tro, Madrid (2003); Talbot Rice Gallery, Edinburgh (2003); CASA Centro de Arte, Salamanca (2002); Fond Regional dʼArt Contemporain Auvergne, Clermont-Ferrand (2002); ‘Casual Influences’, a touring exhibition organised by the Oriel Mostyn Gallery, Llandudno (2000); Musée des Beaux-Arts de Nantes (1997).
