SEAN SCULLY: Doric
Benaki Museum of Art, Athens, Greece, May 09 – July 15 2012; IVAM, Valencia, Spain, July 26 – October 28, 2012, curated by Sally Radic; Hugh Lane, Dublin, Ireland, May 2013
May 09, 2012 - July 15, 2012“The inspiration for ‘Doric’ was the architectural form that accompanied the birth of Democracy. Athens being the cradle of Democracy, and all that followed in the west, was what I wanted to pay homage to. I wanted to express order and humanism.” Sean Scully.
The focus of this exhibition will be six monumental Doric paintings produced during the last three years. Immense in scale and ambition these paintings have as their genesis the Doric principle which originated in ancient Greece. Scully’s works often have about them an architectural order and these new paintings take these principles to new levels. Existing somewhere between the abstract and the figurative they capture a sense of the eternal.

SEAN SCULLY: Change and Horizontals
Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art, Middlesbrough, March 02 – July 13 2012, Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna, Rome, March 14 – 09 June 2013, and
The Drawing Center, New York, NY, September 26 – November 10, 2013
Following a successful opening show at the Timothy Taylor Gallery, Sean Scully’s ‘Change and Horizontals’ exhibition travels to the Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art where it will run until 13 July. Curated by Joanna Kleinberg and Brett Littman of the Drawing Center, this intensely focused survey is comprised of acrylic, ink, graphite, and masking-tape drawings from 1974–75—presented together for the first time in over 30 years—as well as two large-scale paintings from the same period and the artist’s personal notebooks. Completed in just over a year, in transition from London to New York City, Scully’s Change and Horizontals series (1974–75) demonstrate an abstraction firmly rooted in the outside world—drawing inspiration from landscape, light conditions, nature, and architecture.
